The vision of Learn to Love Inc. is for every child to have access to education, healthcare, and love. Our mission is to support and assist underprivileged children by promoting their health, education, and emotional well-being. We are a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization.
Learn to Love was founded in 2005 after my visit to Mumbai, India. I was shocked to see how deeply not only poverty but also unfortunate circumstances such as physical and mental impairments affected the lives of the underprivileged, especially children. I have a vivid memory of going to Santa Cruz with my mother one excruciatingly hot afternoon. On our way there, we stopped by a barista and got iced coffee. By the time we reached the shopping area, my iced coffee was basically drained--perhaps there was a drop or two left. I walked over to the nearest trash can to throw it away when I was approached by a young boy. He held out his hand and squinted up at me through the sweat that clung to his face, asking for the tiny drop of coffee that was left in my cup. I watched him take this cup back to the other side of the street, where he took off the lid and fed the ice cubes to his younger sibling.
As we continued to walk through the marketplace, I saw more and more children. One little girl in particular was trailing us. We would come outside of a store, and she would be squatting on the sidewalk. My reaction to witnessing such intense poverty is simply inexplicable. What was worse was that I was expected to not care; to accept that poverty is a standard of living for many. Well, I couldn't. My mother and I went to the street food vendor and bought a few meals for the destitute children we saw, but I knew that buying a meal was only a temporary solution. By the time the next sunrise would arrive, the children would be hungry again.
I wanted to find a long-term solution, so I founded Learn to Love. It began as a Project Learn to Love, and we partnered with IAPA to provide a few children with the education and healthcare necessary to escape the cycle of poverty. I soon realized we would be much more effective as a nonprofit organization; thus, we became Learn to Love, Inc., a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization. Today, we successfully aid underprivileged children by providing the education and healthcare they need to grow and learn. Unfortunately, there seems to be an endless amount of children who still do not have access to these basic necessary rights. We look to supporters like you to prove to these kids that we can learn to love and care for those in need, giving them opportunities and a chance at happiness.
